Travertine Maintenance Cleaning

Travertine cleaning should be part of virtually everyone’s yearly maintenance program. Undoubtedly you want to be certain you are hiring a company that actually knows what they are doing. More specifically, while many companies may appear to have a good reputation the Technician who actually performs the service may not have the same level of experience that the company itself claims to possess. Buyers beware! Case in point. A stone cleaning company fired for incompetence at the Capitol.

There are four principal variations present in the finishes of this natural stone, which are, honed (matte), tumbled, brushed (textured), and last but not least, polished (shiny). Your professional tile cleaner should be able to successfully identify which type of travertine that you have and is its ‘porosity’, or how porous is the stone. Its color, durability, porosity, and density will vary from quarry to quarry. As a side note the highest grade of travertine comes from Italy. A “one-size-fits-all’ mentality is a recipe for disaster when cleaning, sealing, and restoring travertine. When handled correctly travertine cleaning and travertine sealing can help maintain your travertine tile last for decades in your home or office.

Two of The Biggest Travertine Cleaning Mistakes We See

Cleaning travertine requires special tools, chemicals, sealers, and protectants to prevent scratching, etching, and permanent staining. If your professional DOES NOT have the right tools, chemicals, and expertise he could create a scenario for some fairly significant restoration to your travertine stone. CAUTION: Never clean travertine with cleaning products containing lemon, bleach, vinegar, or any other type of acidic product. Also never use scouring creams or powders. These types of products will etch or scratch travertine floors and cause costly travertine restoration services to your budget. Also NEVER clean with a high alkaline cleaner as they will break down the sealer leaving your floors vulnerable to water stains, etch marks, and other stains. We also NEVER recommend using OxiClean or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser as a cleaner on any type of natural stone. OxiClean and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser have many beneficial uses but using it to clean your travertine is NOT one of them. All our clients receive a comprehensive Stone Care Guide that addresses these issues.

The second biggest mistake we see people make is that either the home owner or their ‘professional travertine cleaner’ will use a generic sealer from the local hardware store and now the floor has a sticky residue. Because your honed and tumbled travertine and some other finishes are porous, and because the porosity will vary based on the type of travertine it is, you will need a sealer that correctly matches the type of stone you have. Our Stone Care Guide provides specific instructions for the cleaning and maintenance of your travertine and other natural stone.

In many instances, when cleaning travertine that is even moderately soiled the process may uncover surface scratches, small holes, and even hairline cracks that are disguised from the soiling. Similarly, the travertine maintenance cleaning may dislodge fill in the travertine that is not stable. Our travertine repair or travertine honing process will adequately address most of those issues.
